The Romantic Poet
The Romantic Poet
What does the Romantic Poet, of popular myth, look like? He is a surreal hybrid, ardently clutching a Greek pot in one hand whilst dangling a daffodil from the other. He chatters a lot, but __ since his favourite topics include the ugliness of the modern world, the beauty of solitude and, above all, the majesty of his own soul __ he is often talking to himself. Being a naïve optimist he grins; but hypersensitivity makes him volatile and he may suddenly burst into tears, or even faint. Yet, should a thunderstorm be imminent, he will instantly put to sea in a frail boat or go prancing up the nearest mountain. Whichever of these routes to intensity he takes, he will still be distracted by dreams of lovelier places and better times. Therefore he may well stumble, while touchingly young, into an early grave.
